For Loose Leaf Tea, 100g Does Not Always Mean the Same Pouch Size

A 100g tea pouch is not always the same size. Loose leaf tea, herbal tea, flower tea, and powder tea all take different space inside a bag.

For Loose Leaf Tea, 100g Does Not Always Mean the Same Pouch Size

ο»Ώ
A small herbal tea brand once asked us:
β€œWhat pouch size do I need for 100g tea?”
Fair question. And honestly, it is a very normal question. Most new brands do not know that tea volume can change the pouch size so much.
But the honest answer is:
It depends on the tea.
100g loose leaf tea is not the same as 100g tea powder. 100g herbal tea is not the same as 100g flower tea. Even when the weight is the same, the pouch size may still be different.
That is why we usually do not choose the pouch size by weight alone. For loose leaf tea, herbal tea, and flower tea, our custom tea packaging pouches are usually checked based on both weight and volume.

Tea can be light, but bulky

ο»Ώ
Loose leaf tea is often fluffy.
Herbal blends can be even bulkier. Flower tea also takes space because the shape is not compact.
That means two products with the same weight may fill a pouch very differently.
So when a customer says, β€œI need a bag for 100g tea,” we usually ask one more thing:
What kind of tea is it?
That helps much more than weight alone.
🟒 Tea volume check: βœ… Loose leaf tea is light and bulky βœ… Tea powder is dense and compact βœ… Flower tea may need more space βœ… Herbal blends can fill the pouch quickly βœ… Same weight does not always mean same pouch size

A photo helps a lot

If you already have a current pouch, send a photo.
If not, even a photo of the tea itself helps.
We are not looking for perfect studio photos. A simple phone photo is enough.
It helps us see:
βœ… leaf size βœ… product volume βœ… how bulky it is βœ… whether a standard pouch size may work βœ… whether the pouch should be adjusted
A photo can often explain the product better than a long message.
If you can take a photo with the tea beside a ruler, cup, or current pouch, that is even better.

Tea is not only about size

Tea also needs protection.
Some tea products need better moisture barrier. Some need stronger aroma protection. Some look better with a clear window. Some are better fully covered.
That is why tea packaging is usually a mix of:
🟒 Tea pouch basics: βœ… Correct pouch size βœ… Suitable material βœ… Practical zipper βœ… Smart window choice βœ… Clean front design
The goal is not only to make the pouch look good. It also needs to keep the tea dry, clean, and easy to store.

ο»Ώ

Should you add a zipper?

In most cases, yes.
Most customers do not use the whole tea pouch at one time. A zipper makes the pouch easier to open, close, and store at home.
For retail tea packaging, zipper is usually a practical choice.
It is a small feature, but it makes the package feel much easier to use.

ο»Ώ

What about a clear window?

When customers are not sure, we usually suggest starting with a smaller window first. It shows the product, but still keeps more printed area and better protection.
ο»Ώ
A window can work very well for tea.
It helps customers see the real leaves, flowers, or herbal blend inside. That often makes the product feel more natural and trustworthy.
But a big window is not always better.
If the tea is light-sensitive, or if the brand wants better protection, a smaller window may make more sense.
Sometimes no window is also the better choice.
So the question is not only:
β€œDo you want a window?”
It is more like:
β€œWhat does the window need to do?”

Different tea, different pouch feel

🟒 For natural herbal tea brands, kraft paper bags can give a warmer, more organic shelf look.
🟒 If the tea leaves are very bulky, side gusset pouches may give more filling space and a cleaner shape after packing.
🟒 For many small tea brands, custom stand-up pouches are often a simple and practical starting point.
🟒 A clean matte pouch may suit a premium loose leaf tea range.
So again, the answer is not only β€œ100g.”
It is also:
What tea is it? How much space does it take? How do you want it to look on the shelf? How long does it need to stay fresh?

What to send when asking about tea pouches

🟒 Before you ask for a tea pouch quote: βœ… Tea type βœ… Filling weight βœ… Product photo βœ… Current pouch photo, if you have one βœ… Need zipper? βœ… Need window? βœ… Shelf-life need βœ… Quantity per design βœ… Artwork status
If you only know part of this, that is fine too.
Just start with the tea type and filling weight. We can help check the pouch direction from there.

A simple reminder

For tea packaging, weight is only one part.
Volume matters. Aroma matters. Moisture protection matters. Window size matters. How the pouch closes also matters.
If you are not sure which pouch size works for your tea, send us the tea type, filling weight, and a quick product photo. We can help you check a practical option before production.

If you are not sure about the pouch size, do not guess too much. Send us the tea photo first. We can help check a practical size range before sampling.
