Does Stainless Steel Jewelry Fade? What We Tell Our Buyers

Will stainless steel jewelry fade? We explain how PVD color wears, what salt spray and sweat tests really mean, and how proper care helps the finish last longer.

After working with stainless steel jewelry for many years, we hear the same questions from buyers again and again:
Will the gold color fade? How long will the plating last? Can I shower with it? Is it sweat resistant?
I don't think the answer needs to be complicated.
First, one simple fact:
The natural color of stainless steel is silver or silver-gray.
The gold, rose gold, black, gunmetal, blue, rainbow and copper colors we usually see are mostly created by surface treatments such as PVD vacuum ion plating.
I often explain it to customers this way:
The color is like a coat worn by the stainless steel.
If it is a surface layer, normal wear will happen sooner or later.
The real difference is how soon.
So if you ask me:
“Can PVD stainless steel jewelry stay the same color forever?”
I would not promise that.

Does a test report prove that jewelry will never fade?

We hear this quite often.
A buyer may tell us:
“Another supplier says they have a test report proving their jewelry will never fade.”
Test reports are important.
But we also need to understand what they actually prove.
Take the common Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) test as an example.
Under ISO 9227 conditions, the test chamber is kept at around 35±2°C, the sodium chloride concentration is 50±5 g/L — roughly 5% salt, and the collected solution has a pH of 6.5–7.2.
A product may be tested for 24, 48, 72, 96 hours or longer depending on the requirement. There is no single number of hours that automatically applies to every piece of jewelry.

Artificial sweat testing works in a similar way.
The “sweat” used in the laboratory is a prepared solution.
For example, a commonly referenced EN 1811 artificial sweat solution contains about 0.5% sodium chloride, 0.1% urea and 0.1% lactic acid, with a pH around 6.5.
These tests are useful.
They tell us how a product performs under controlled conditions.
But they cannot tell us:
“This bracelet will definitely stay gold for two years.”
Real life is much more complicated.
Someone may spray perfume in the morning, apply sunscreen during the day, sweat heavily in summer and then shower without taking the bracelet off.
There may be shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
At the weekend, the same bracelet may go into a swimming pool with chlorine.
On holiday, it may meet seawater, sweat and sunscreen at the same time.
And don't forget the biggest thing:
daily friction.
A laboratory normally controls the temperature, solution and testing time.
Real life gives jewelry:
sweat + perfume + sunscreen + shampoo + swimming pool water + seawater + friction.
Sometimes all in the same week.
And every person wears jewelry differently.
That is why we tell buyers:
A test report is not meaningless. But laboratory test results are not the same thing as real-life wearing time.

So how long does PVD stainless steel jewelry last?

This is actually the hardest question to answer with one number.
Take two identical gold PVD bracelets.
One person wears the bracelet every day and showers with it.
Another person only wears it when going out, takes it off at home and wipes it clean after wearing.
After six months or one year, the condition of those two bracelets may be very different.
Rings and bracelets also receive much more friction than necklaces and earrings, so they usually show wear earlier.
This is why I am always cautious when I hear someone say:
“Guaranteed no fading for three years.”
After more than a decade in the stainless steel jewelry business, we prefer to tell buyers what we really know.

Three things we normally tell our customers

First: gold is not the natural color of stainless steel.
Gold, rose gold, black and other colors are created through processes such as PVD vacuum ion plating.
Good PVD coating can have very good color durability, but it is still a surface finish and normal wear can happen over time.

Second: normal wear does not mean poor quality.
Salt spray tests and artificial perspiration tests are still valuable.
They help us check whether the coating process is stable and whether the product has reached the required level of corrosion resistance.
That is the real value of testing.
But we would never show a test report and tell a customer:
“Don't worry. It will never fade.”
That is simply not how we want to do business.

Third: proper care really helps.
If you want the finish to last longer:
Remove your jewelry before showering.
Try not to wear it while swimming, in a hot spring or in the sea.
Apply perfume first and put your jewelry on afterwards.
Wipe the jewelry with a soft cloth after heavy sweating.
Clean and dry it before storing it.
Nothing complicated.
It is a bit like buying a good piece of clothing.
Take care of it and it will naturally stay in good condition for longer.
Jewelry is the same.

One last thing

So, does stainless steel jewelry fade?
There is no simple yes or no answer.
Natural silver stainless steel does not have a colored coating to “fade.”
But for gold, rose gold, black and other PVD-coated stainless steel jewelry, some surface wear over a long period of use is normal.
What we can do as a supplier is simple:
Use good stainless steel.
Control the PVD coating process.
Do the necessary testing.
And tell our buyers the truth.
For us, that is much better than simply saying:
“Never fades.”
