What Shipping Option Is Best for My Wholesale Jewelry Order from China?

A buyer recently asked us:
“I only need 3–5 samples. Why is the shipping still about USD 45?”
It is a fair question.
The order may be small, but international carriers still have a minimum charge. A low MOQ reduces your inventory risk, but it does not remove the basic shipping cost.
The best shipping method depends on your quantity, delivery time, budget, packaging and tracking needs.

Starting with samples

For 3–5 samples, DHL, UPS or FedEx is usually the simplest option.
It is faster and normally provides clearer tracking. For some routes, delivery may take around 3–5 days.
Based on a recent DHL quotation to Canada:
  • 3–5 samples: about USD 45;
  • 20 pieces: about USD 60;
  • 30 pieces: about USD 70.
For that route, the samples were charged according to a 1 kg minimum, even though the jewelry itself weighed much less.
If your budget is very limited, an economy cross-border small parcel may cost less. However, delivery can take much longer, tracking may be limited and the risk of delay or loss is higher.

Testing the market with 20–30 pieces

If you want to test more styles, a mixed order of 20–30 pieces may be more practical than ordering only a few samples.
The freight may be slightly higher than a sample shipment, but the cost per piece can be lower because the basic shipping cost is spread across more products.
A recent air DDP to Canada reference was:
  • 1 kg minimum: about USD 33;
  • 20 pieces: about USD 45;
  • 30 pieces: about USD 55;
  • delivery time: around 7–12 days.
For selected ready-stock jewelry for mixed wholesale orders, some styles can start from 5 pcs per style. This is the product MOQ, not the shipping charge.
All prices above are reference quotations for specific routes. Freight changes according to the destination, date, weight, package size and shipping method.

What if the order includes branded packaging?

Some buyers also order branded boxes, display cards or retail packaging.
In this case, the jewelry may not be very heavy, but the cartons can be large. Shipping may then be based on volumetric or chargeable weight rather than actual product weight.
For many cartons of branded packaging, express courier is not always the most economical option. We normally compare the actual weight, carton dimensions, total volume and chargeable weight first.
Air freight can be cheaper than express for bulky cartons.
If the buyer also has other goods ready in China, we can check whether the cargo can be consolidated and sent together by sea. A shared-container or LCL shipment may help spread the freight cost across the combined goods.
For bulk orders, the quotation should confirm:
  • carton quantity;
  • carton dimensions;
  • total gross weight;
  • total volume in CBM;
  • delivery address;
  • estimated delivery time.

What about larger wholesale orders?

For larger cartons or regular replenishment orders, the total freight may be higher, but the cost per piece can be lower.
Depending on the destination and shipment size, we may compare:
  • air freight for faster delivery;
  • sea freight for larger cartons;
  • rail freight for suitable routes;
  • air, sea or rail DDP for door-to-door delivery.
Sea and rail freight usually take longer and are not suitable for only a few samples, but they may make more sense for larger shipments.

Is DDP only for air freight?

No.
DDP is not a transport method. It is a delivery term.
It can be arranged by air, sea or rail, depending on the destination and available route.
With a confirmed DDP quotation, the agreed total normally includes transportation, customs clearance and import duties or taxes.
In normal circumstances, the buyer pays the confirmed total before shipment and waits for delivery without making another standard payment when the parcel arrives.

Will I pay tax when the parcel arrives?

It depends on the shipping terms.
DHL, UPS and FedEx are transportation services. If the shipment is not DDP, the destination country may charge import duty, VAT/GST, customs clearance or brokerage fees according to local policy.
The courier name alone does not tell you whether taxes are included.
If the quotation is confirmed as DDP, the agreed duties, taxes and customs costs are normally included. Before payment, confirm exactly what the quotation covers.

What should I confirm before paying?

Ask the supplier:
  • Is the shipment DDP or duties unpaid?
  • Are import duties and taxes included?
  • Is delivery to my door?
  • Will I receive full tracking?
  • How long should delivery take?
  • What happens if the parcel is delayed or lost?
  • Are remote-area or special customs charges excluded?
